Dutch Customs On December 5th there are multiple siteings of Sinter Klaas and Pete. Children leave snacks in their shoes by the hearth in hopes of getting treats from Saint Nicholas. Children who misbehave may be given a rod, switch, or no treats at all from Zwarte Piet. Parties are thrown. Heart-shaped fondant candies called borstplaat, chocolate, marzipan, taii- taii, gingerbread, pepernote, and speculaas cookies are eaten and left as gifts by Sinter Klaas. Gifts are exchanged between people. These are elaborately wrapped and disguised and contain poems. (4)
