Swiss Martinmass Customs: Rebenslichter

In towns around Zurich and Winterthur, children hollow out white turnips and carve patterns in the surfaces. Then they place lighted candles inside and carry them through the streets. The town of Richterswil holds its Turnip Lantern Festival on Martinmas, November 11. At 8 p.m. all the town’s lights go out, and for the rest of the evening it’s completely lit by turnip lanterns. They hang around houses and balconies, and are carried by paraders and all the spectators. (36)
