Advent: Is the preparation for Christmas. It marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year. It starts on the Sunday closest to November 30th, the feast of Saint Andrew, and lasts for four Sundays. Advent calendars are purchased. These have tiny cut out numbered windows for each December day. An advent wreath of evergreen with four candles is placed in the home and one candle is lit for every Sunday. Sometimes a lit candle is placed in the center to celebrate Christ being the light of the world. The last Sunday before Christmas is called Golden Sunday. (1)
